Set sail for the stars

to dream:

"We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars."  - Carl Sagan

"We do not ask for what useful purpose the birds do sing, for song is their pleasure since they were created for singing. Similarly, we ought not to ask why the human mind troubles to fathom the secrets of the heavens. The diversity of the phenomena of nature is so great and the treasures hidden in the heavens so rich, precisely in order that the human mind shall never be lacking in fresh nourishment."
 - Johannes Kepler as quoted in Cosmos (1980)

"By exploring other worlds we safeguard this one. By itself, I think this fact more than justifies the money our species has spent in sending ships to other worlds. It is our fate to live during one of the most perilous and, at the same time, one of the most hopeful chapters in human history."  - Carl Sagan

Dream boat

this summer I hope we can find a small starter boat...
and gradually upgrade to larger sail boats and gain more sailing experience...
I love the pink sail against the navy ocean.
okay probably not this big but this is pretty awesome.

we've even entertained at the thought of living on a boat for awhile, for the experience.
we can slowly make our way up the coast... change neighborhoods on a whim..
fresh seafood? endless swimming pool?
fanciful thoughts I suppose.

(oh right we have cats. darn.)

Stark Interiors

I've been drawn to stark interiors lately... with furniture at a minimum, light textures and an elegantly unfinished look with bare, white walls.

This look unfortunately doesn't seem to work at our new place, or maybe I just don't know what I'm doing... :\  I refuse to buy a traditional sofa & other bulky things.... partly because that would mean more things to lug around next time we move...  oh well... next time maybe a loft will be more "design friendly"...

Home is a pale blue dot

beautiful words about this little blue dot, our earth, seen 3.7 billion miles away:

"We succeeded in taking that picture [from deep space], and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

"The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.

"Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity -- in all this vastness -- there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

-Carl Sagan
